Hope School of Nyangungu, Mutaho, Burundi

The Hope School of Nyangungu is a multi-ethnic school in rural Burundi where children, Batwa, Bahutu, Batutsi, learn together and develop the skills necessary to become active members of their community. Since 2001 the Hope School of Nyangungu has provided education to over 500 Batwa and 363 non-Batwa children. The school has enabled some of Burundi’s most vulnerable children to have access to education giving them a chance to complete primary and secondary education and sit national exams leading to greater opportunities such as university and skilled employment.

In addition to educating the children of Nyangungu the school has also strengthened community cohesion engaging the multi-ethnic community members many of whom include the parents of children who attend the school, to work together and continually play a role in all aspects of the schools development. The community of Nyangungu have become stakeholders of the school, striving to see that the school develops and succeeds.

The Hope School of Nyangungu is a multi-ethnic school in which all children, Batwa, Bahutu, Batutsi and others learn together, play together, share together and develop the skills necessary to become active members of their community. The school fosters high learning expectations of all students equally, creating an inclusive environment in which each child is valued and respected. The school takes the stance of celebrating diversity, whilst also promoting unity, this aspect is extremely important for the community of Nyangungu which in addition to the Bahutu and Batutsi groups is also homes to a substantial population of Batwa.
