        PROJECT: Batwa Hope School Expansion

        Project:
Phase I:  Finish 9th grade school room at Hope School in Burundi.  Total Cost $5,000 - COMPLETED

Phase II: Build 10th grade school room at Hope School in Burundi.  Total Cost $10,000 - To be completed 2012

        Background:
Burundi, one of the world's poorest nations, is emerging from a 12-year, ethnic-based civil war, which resulted in more than 200,000 deaths. In 2005, the country established a new constitution and elected a majority Hutu government.

Two thirds of Burundians live beneath the poverty line and only one in two children go to school. In this country, 69% suffer from malnutrition and 48% are illiterate. The Batwa people, the original inhabitants of Burundi, are a marginalised group who has even less access to food and education than the country's other inhabitants. They are a Pygmy people who now make up only 1% or 2% of the population. Today the population is divided between the Hutu (approximately 85%) and the Tutsi (approximately 14%).
